Science

We are studying our Pebbles, Sand, and Silt Science kit for our first 3 months of school. Today, we looked at characteristics of rocks, specifically hardness, texture, and color. I combined the first two main lessons from our FOSS Investigation #1, 3 Rocks and Washing Rocks. The kiddos were really interested in how the combination of rocks being rubbed could actually create smaller rocks (hardness). They noticed under hand lenses that some of the rocks had small holes, and when dropped in water, not only changed color (brighter), but also created bubbles. Through questioning, the kiddos derived that the holes in the rocks trapped air, and when dropped in water, the air released, making bubbles.
