Math

Every year, I give my students free-reign to just design and explore with Pattern Blocks. They think this is sooooo fun! But, I have an agenda to this fun task too - I am looking to see if they already understand sharing vertex and edge of differing shapes, and if they are able to construct new shapes from given shapes. It's a great way to see what they can do in regards to Geometry, but also the way they see objects - it gives me great insight! When we do our Measurement unit, I love to read the story, "How Big is a Foot?" by Rolf Myller They always measure me with their little cut out feet. By the way, I have them do it in partners, they decide whose foot to use, trace it, then I run to the copier and have them cut out 20 or so of their "foot". It gives them a tangible measurement tool.
